Is One License Plate a Collection?
My dad died when I was 13 years old. It seems as though after that time I was very proud of my last name. I do not now why, but it seems is though that is all I had left of my dad, was his name. I remember when I got my drivers license, one of the very first things I did was apply for a personalized license plate with my last name on it. When I seen that Leftwich was available I got so excited. When the license plate finally came I displayed it proudly on my car. I wanted everyone to see my name on my license plate. It always helped me reflect on my dad. Then a sad day came, as I had reached a point in my life where mistakes caught up with me and for those mistakes, I lost my insurance AND my personalized license plate. I remember feeling heart broken because of the situation I was in. I wanted so bad to be able to regain that license plate but it just was not meant to be. Not long after I lost it, I found out a family member had applied for it and had gotten it. In one way I was sad because I felt as though that was MY license plate. In another way I felt ok because at least it was in the family and I felt as though when I got back on my feet they would transfer that special item back to me, but that did not happen. I never understood why they would not let me have what I thought was MY license plate back. Where they punishing me for the mistakes I made? Where they just as proud of that name as I was? I guess I will never know the answer to that question. One day I was at the home of the family member that had obtained the license plate. This was several years later. I looked up on the wall and there it was, hanging on a nail. MY license plate, MY name. I inquired about it and was told that the original had been damaged, the corner was all bent, and that they had applied for a new one. I stood there staring at it and I guess the look on my face told them how I felt. They said "do you want that old license plate"? I immediately took it and began remembering what it meant to me when I first got it and how proud I was to have that last name that was on that personalized license plate. Although I was not able to display that license plate on my vehicle anymore, as they still continue to use it, I was able to keep the original and occasionally look at it and think back on what it meant to me. For many years it has been stuck down beside my seat inside my vehicle, and from time to time I pull it out and think about my name and my dad. Sure it is only one license plate, but it is a collectors item to me. One that I will cherish forever and ever. www.TheLicensePlateCollector.com |
