Collecting Antique License Plates
By Jeff Leftwich
Collecting antique license plates is an expensive hobby like collecting vintage cars. However, it is better than vintage cars since its authenticity can hardly be questioned. This is because the year in which they were issued is always clearly marked on these plates. License plates began its existence in 1903. But it is the Alabama license plates from 1912 to 1915 and Arizona from 1914 that are the most sought after. This is because around that time, Alabama license plates were made of porcelain, and Arizona’s were made of copper. Georgia license plates in 1910 were the first to have reflector tags. And the smallest ever issued were West Virginia plates in 1903. Antique license plates in good condition can be very valuable. Its value is measured through the year it was issued, size, and uniqueness of materials. Special issue plates are can also be part of ones collections. It could be a vanity tag of a famous person, bicentennial plates, judicial plates, government plates or plates with eye-catching slogans. Aside from your taking the license plate from your grandfather’s vintage car, you there are several ways to obtain antique license plates. It can be bought from flea markets and yard sales. There are also several online auctions dedicated to vintage plates. If you have been collecting long enough, you will eventually develop an eye for priceless pieces. You will be able to indentify touched up tags or spot even the smallest dents that can lessen the value of plate. It is at times surprising how far a collector would go just to get his hands on a valuable piece of vintage plate. Auctions can easily become furious. Although it is a lot cheaper than collecting vintage cars, it is as close as it you get in achieving your dream of collecting these cars by having an important part of them in your possession.
